Academic Writing I: Gearing Up for College is a 16-week course teaching the skills and strategies students need to produce essays appropriate for an academic audience. Students will create four essays:
- Literacy Narrative
- Observation
- Evaluation
- Position Argument
Along the way students will learn to implement a systematic writing process, develop critical reading strategies, and practice informal research.
This is the first of a two-course sequence. The second course, Academic Writing II (now in development), introduces students to more formal researched writing.

Prerequisites:
This course is designed for students in 11th or 12th grade with mastery of basic writing skills such as sentence mechanics, paragraphing, spelling and proofreading. They should also have a reliable computer and internet access.
