A homeschool writing educator with experience in the classroom, online, and at home.

I’m Janet Goodrich, a former home educator and college English professor in the Northeast. I’ve taught at four different colleges in two different states, worked as an online writing tutor for an international educational company, and authored one book, but my most amazing experience has been homeschooling my two daughters from elementary school through high school. Here are a few highlights from my bio:

Our Story

I always assumed our children would go to public school. But as my oldest daughter’s kindergarten year wrapped up, I met some home schoolers who dismantled all my objections and questions. Intrigued, I bought Susan Wise Bauer’s The Well-Trained Mind and was so taken with its description of classical education that the next year we started homeschooling. “We’ll take it a year at a time,” my husband and I told each other. But through the ups and downs, we ended up sticking with it not only through Alison’s high school graduation and entrance to college, but through our younger daughter Abby’s as well.

As of 2022, our homeschooling journey is complete. It’s been a wonderful ride, one that was started to bring about a certain kind of education, but that ended with an unforeseen treasure: rich family relationships, the kind that come from all that time together, and a deep gratitude for being able to live out this adventure.

Now, my desire is to give back to the homeschool community by offering  encouragement and quality online English instruction for home educating families. By developing courses that hone attentive and thoughtful reading, deep thinking, and compelling writing, I hope to help others build on the strong foundation of homeschooling to develop young men and women that know who they are and can articulate it in a way that commands respect. As I watch my daughters moving forward and finding their way, I am thrilled to see the poise and thoughtfulness of their engagement in the issues we face, and I’ve tried to capture some of the underpinnings of those qualities in the courses I create.

Why Another Writing Class?

Over the years, I’ve never found a home school writing curriculum that teaches writing the way I would want my children to learn. Many of them emphasize grammar, or a certain formula or structure, but I haven’t found one that capitalizes on this basic truth: we learn to write by writing. Unfortunately, though, few subjects generate the kind of anxiety that writing does. Many students simply give up by the time they get to college. This is a tragedy! Communicating well is not just a valuable professional skill; it’s deeply satisfying to express ourselves well, a basic part of connecting with others. I try to create courses that give students a process for approaching any writing task with confidence.

What About Literature?

Though the first courses I’ve created are focused on writing, I have a number of literature courses in mind for high school and middle school readers! Books and stories have been a cornerstone of our homeschooling approach and our family life, and I believe they play a key role in developing active, imaginative minds.

I’m looking forward to adding some literature courses that provide students with opportunities to think about how the books connect to their lives, and to discuss them both with other students and in writing.
